Botox (Botulinumtoxin A)
These days, orthodontic treatment reaches far beyond fixing a crooked smile. At Stevenson Orthodontics we provide services to correct malocclusions (improper bites), improve your oral health, and improve the aesthetics of your smile, whether directly or indirectly. Cosmetic improvements to your smile do not always involve your teeth. In some cases, especially for our older patients, we may recommend nonsurgical treatment that improves your facial appearance and enhances your smile. One of these treatments, Botox, provides both cosmetic and clinical results!
What Is Botox?Botox, or Botulinum toxin, is a purified neurotoxin that inhibits the release of the chemical acetylcholine at the junction of the nerve and muscle. Injecting Botulinum toxin into the muscles temporarily reduces the activity of the muscle by blocking the transmitters between the motor nerves. Despite popular belief, there is no loss of sensory feeling in these muscles.
Uses for BotoxBotox is typically used to eliminate wrinkles on the forehead, around the corners of the eyes, between the eyes, and around the lips. Wrinkles are formed by the loss of collagen and repetitive contraction of facial muscles. By reducing the activity of the muscle, we reduce the appearance of the wrinkles. Reducing your wrinkles can redirect attention to your beautiful smile.
Botox is not just used for cosmetic reasons. We may also recommend Botox to provide relief for a pain caused by TMJ disorders, and bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching). With Botox, we can also alleviate discomfort for patients who have frequent headaches or migraines. Most patients, however, choose Botox as a minimally invasive alternative to cosmetic surgery.
Botox TreatmentBotox treatment is simple, effective, and very safe. Before your treatment, we will take a series of photographs and perform a brief consultation to ensure you are a candidate for Botox treatment. Dr. Perry Stevenson will ask you about your goals, review the procedure, and determine which areas we want to target. This would be the time to ask any questions and voice and concerns.
The procedure is typically brief and does not require the use of a local anesthetic. We may choose to numb the area with a cold pack to reduce discomfort. Next, we will administer a few small injections of Botox directly into the muscles. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
After your treatment, you can immediately return to your daily life. We may give you aftercare instructions and ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment two weeks later. You may experience some minor side effects such as redness, bruising, and swelling. The Botulinum toxin effects take about two weeks to fully develop and last about three to four months. At the muscles regain movement, the lines and wrinkles will begin to resurface. If you want to maintain your youthful appearance, we recommend repeat injections every four to six months. Over times, these lines and wrinkles should become less noticeable and more relaxed.
